Seznec said Heirnir's pain would be alleviated by making him into a complete undead. To do that required a Lich Shaman's orb, so you killed the creatures until you obtained what you needed. When you used the orb on Heirnir, he claimed to hear the voice of his dead wife and let go, fading into a true undead.
